Conflict Counselling
Melding the line between conflict coaching and psychotherapy, conflict counselling explores individual responses to conflict, offering an individual insight, self-awareness and techniques to approach a conflictual situation from a more empowered and resourced place. Internal conflict resolution becomes a transformational process, where an individual has the opportunity to deepen their self-awareness, as they are actively taking steps toward an outward resolution of the conflict. Conflict Counselling is a recommended in circumstances where mediation may not be possible, due to another party being unwilling or unable to attend a mediation – or as an addition to mediation where deeper personal exploration is desired.
How Does Conflict Counselling Work?

I help the client to explore conflict in a process-based way. This means, looking at the dynamics of a specific conflict, understanding the parts of us which are affected, getting insight into our triggers, and what our needs are. This can be done, for example, through listening for cues and allowing the individual’s process to unfold. A cue may present itself in the form of a body symptom, an emotion, a visual image or a movement, to be unfolded and amplified. Relational aspects can be explored through role play, role reversal, parts work and interacting with the counsellor.
A conflict counselling session may also involve developing practical strategies for handling the conflict, and building skills and resilience for future conflicts.
This process empowers individuals to navigate disagreements constructively and reach amicable solutions, but most importantly to heal internally, and find personal insight and clarity.

What to Expect in a Conflict Counselling Session
A typical conflict coaching session has some structure, yet is flexible to meet the needs and follow the unique process of the client. Here is an example overview of what a session might look like:
Drop in and conflict overview
The client is asked to express their intention for the session and their ideal outcome from the work together. From there the coach and client discuss the nature of the conflict, and explore the dynamics involved.
Internal enquiry and exploration
The coach guides the client through a process of exploration and reflection. This involves examining the client’s feelings, thoughts, and behaviours related to the conflict. The client reflects on their role in the conflict and identifies any underlying issues, parts, wounds or triggers that may be causing internal distress, or influencing the situation. This may be explored through parts work, feeling cues, movement, role reversal etc.
Skill Building
During this phase, the coach helps the client develop specific skills needed to manage the conflict. This may include communication techniques, emotional regulation strategies, and problem-solving skills. Role-playing scenarios and exercises are often used to practice these skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Strategy Development
The coach and client collaborate to create a personalized conflict management plan. This plan outlines the steps the client will take to address the conflict. The client may be offered homework or practice follow-up.
Action Plan and Follow-up
At the end of the session, the client develops an action plan that includes concrete steps for implementing the strategies discussed. The client may wish to schedule follow-up sessions if ongoing support is required.
